About Me
Artist's Statement
I think of my body of work like a personal history book. Each piece documents a different emotion, feeling, story, or experience within my past. I use screen-printing and weaving as my main two methods of working, I create objects with the influence of these past stories and the memories they evoke while making. My use of color is bright and eye catching, promising to encapsulate the viewer within the color itself. I use mark making as a way of communicating what color cannot, which is the reality of what these memories bring. Trauma and tragedy are in the forefront of my abstract subject matter for communication while when used in tandem with color, it causes a subversion of expectation and creates a possibly familiar if not happy experience for the viewer. While the memories associated with my intentionality are different than the viewers point of view, these works act as a form of revenge over my past traumas. I use revenge as an art form, not against those who have wronged me but against what my distorted experience of reality has become. For others, the experience is bright, happy, and colorful, for me, the experience is labor, anxiety, and exhaustion, in an attempt to embrace my new reality.
